Depreciation calculator

Appliance depreciation calculator

For a washer, dryer, fridge or other appliance on an insurance claim. Enter what it costs new today and how old it is, and see how much is likely to come off for age. Appliances are set to a 10-year life; change it if your insurer used another.

Example: a washing machine bought 4 years ago

Your insurer calls this the replacement cost.

Roughly is fine. 1.5 means a year and a half.

From our table for appliances.

Taken off for age
$380.00
What it's worth used (actual cash value)
$570.00

$950.00 × (4 ÷ 10) = $380.00

An estimate using our expected lives. Insurers use their own tables, so their figure can differ.

On a replacement cost policy, the $380.00 is usually held back until you replace the item, not taken away. How to get it back

Common appliances, worked out

Each line uses the same life and the same arithmetic as the calculator above.

ItemNew todayAgeTaken offWorth used
Washing machine$950.004 years$380.00$570.00
Refrigerator$1,800.006 years$1,080.00$720.00
Microwave$250.003 years$75.00$175.00

Why your insurer's number may be different

Insurers use their own tables, and many give small appliances a shorter life than large ones. A microwave or a coffee maker may lose value faster than a refrigerator, so more comes off it. If their figure for an item is much higher than this one, ask which life they used. Built-in appliances, like a dishwasher or a wall oven, are often paid as part of the house rather than your belongings.

Do this for every room

Indemnia works out these figures for everything you own, from your receipts and photos. It's free to begin, and there's no card.
