Furniture depreciation calculator
For a couch, table, bed or dresser on an insurance claim. Enter what it costs new today and how old it is, and see how much is likely to come off for age. Furniture is set to a 15-year life; change it if your insurer used another.
- Taken off for age
- $560.00
- What it's worth used (actual cash value)
- $840.00
$1,400.00 × (6 ÷ 15) = $560.00
An estimate using our expected lives. Insurers use their own tables, so their figure can differ.
On a replacement cost policy, the $560.00 is usually held back until you replace the item, not taken away. How to get it back

Why your insurer's number may be different
Insurers use their own tables, and many split furniture into finer groups than we do. A mattress or an office chair may get a shorter life than a solid wood table, so more comes off it. If their figure for an item is much higher than this one, ask which life they used. Some insurers also keep a minimum value on every item, so an old piece is rarely worth nothing on their schedule.
